Murshidabad, on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, was the capital of Bengal under the Bengal’s Nawab in the 18^th century, before the ascendency of the British. The painting shows the Nawab’s palace (since demolished), the British Residency and are stately mansions in the distance.
