Modernity, Nationhood and the Unconscious
Abanindranath Tagore and the Garden House in Konnagar
This virtual exhibition is a tribute to the internationally renowned painter, Abanindranath Tagore (1871-1951). Abanindranath spent formative time as a child at the Konnagar Garden House in the late-1870s, which he affectionately records in his memoir, Jorasankor Dhare (1944). The noted art historian Stella Kramrisch once described Abanindranath as “the first modern Indian painter, for he paints the paradox of the traditional civilisation of his country”.
